This book was also a 2022-2023 OBOB book this past year, but the competition has ended. Still, since I haven’t done a book review for this one yet, and since I could probably write the whole book myself I’ve read it so many times, I figured I would. I liked this book fairly a lot, and it made me, someone who isn’t the biggest fan of ghost stories, actually enjoy this supernatural book.
Ghost Squad, by Claribel A. Ortega is about a girl named Lucely Luna, and she has a very unique ability. All of her relatives that have passed away come back in the form of fireflies, which then live in her willow tree at her house. But lately bad things have been happening, and when her grandmother’s twinkling firefly blinks out, Lucely knows she must do something to restore her beloved ancestor’s light. So she turns to her best friend Syd Faires to help her find a cure. This leads to them finding a spell to unleash spirits, which they cast in an attempt to save Lucely’s grandmother and the rest of her fireflies. But things quickly go awry when the two realize they accidentally sent all of the evil spirits on a rampage throughout their town of St. Augustine, Florida. Now they must call in Syd’s grandmother, who, since she is a witch, can hopefully help them. Sure enough, Babette, and one of her many cats, Chunk, has many tricks up her sleeve, and goes on a hunt with the girls to find the counter-spell to reverse the curse Lucely and Syd had cast. Meanwhile, this isn’t the only problem. Lucely’s father’s ghost tour hasn’t been bringing in enough money, and as a result, the Luna’s might have to move! Can Lucely, along with Babette, Syd, and Chunk, get this crazy ghost business under control, as well as her dad’s actual business, before everything falls apart? find out in the book Ghost Squad!
One reason I liked this book is because are so funny and real, despite the hilariously supernatural conflict. But I did find some of it slightly boring in some sections, but that could’ve been because I had to read it over and over for weeks straight. All in all, I would say that if you like ghosts and eerie happenings, you should read Ghost Squad. Have a good day, and try not to recite a curse that could wreak havoc in your town!
